Keeping the Faith
One of the big problems I believe many safety and OHSE professionals face is the everpresent risk of compassion and professional burn out.To me this means starting to believe that no matter how hard we try companies and organisations always find a way to distort perfectly humane and commonsens e approaches to OHSE policy and implementation.
Not surprisingly many professionals in particular in Western Australia leave the profession or turn to alleviating this problem of listening and conscientious action by moving away from face to face work and moving into the more administrative areas of workers ccompensation or rehabilitation work.
Some of this of course is required with implementation and guarding compliance to both legislation and company safety management plans .what is sacrificed though is the progressive changemanagement aspects and continuuing worker and staff understanding ,discussion, coaching and training that is required to form and perpetuate leadership and understanding and furher action in this fraught area. This requires energy, vision goals and company leadership support as well as workforce participation.
Its about change stupid I hear you say...but of course..but also it is about committment, ethics, energy and life/health/wellness balance..which we tend not to have ourselves but promote vigourously to others who are suffering the consequences of such chronic imbalance.
What strategy/strategies could be used to alleviate such a scandal?
