Taking Personal Responsibility
One of the things I have noticed of recent times in my role as a safety advisor onsite is that many workers find it hard to accept personal responsibility for safety issues and their resolution...their seems to always be an external reason why we dont find ourselves responsible for keeping ourselves safe .Even more disturbing is the degree to which we see ourselves as being responsible for other peoples safety. An example of what I am talking about is when a particular worker sees a worker without his safety glasses on...a common and obvious breach of most workplace PPE guidelines, especially at refineries. No reminding challenging or questioning of the worker breaching took place till after walking past many workers a fellow worker from the same contractor company reminded the forgetful worker of his breech and he rectified the situation. What prevented the other workers from challenging, questioning and reminding ?Why did they fail to act?Was it not seen as their responsibility? Was it not seen as an important issue?....To be continued.
