Getting it done on the never,never...she'll be right mate
There is nothing worse than seeing 'obvious hazards' that everyone is aware of on an industrial site ,...but which because of many and various 'excuses' workers, employers alike say that it has not been fixed because "everyone is aware of it" ...and so 'no one' will trip, fall or injure themselve...and besides 'we have already asked to get it fixed and nothing has happened for three or four weeks'...and so we leave it at that! What sort of logic and apathy creates such feelings and inaction. Its not that the workers or employers are stupid!...so ooo! what sort of logic feeds this type of neglect and inaction? In many of the scenarios I have seen it seems to be a ...'not my department type of attitude' or a calculated..."its not that serious a hazard'type of attitude...at least on the surface.Workers/management sometimes seem to have the macho attitude that there is a scale of seriousness and risk that they can calculate that will avoid unecessary fuss and prevention of injury by saying she'll be right,no one has hurt themselves so far. This is even aginst all training in Job hazard analysis, inductions, training in trade skills and even safety inspection warnings. Many solutions ..especially on scaffold platforms that are not high, as a case in point, can be fixed ,as in a recent situation I was privy to ,within 'minutes'.Just a quick tightening of the wire bindings on scaffold planks to make secure(by qualified scaffolder) reduced the risk of the boards flipping, separating to create a hole to fall through and preventing the wire bindings from becoming looped trip wires!*?Why didnt such take place earlier?
I dont think there is one answer.I will investigate this further as time goes on...but one thing certainly stands out. That is that we as staff, management and workers don't feel a strong bond of responsibility to one another and become apathetic and 'cloud' responsibilities for our own and others safety.Ciao for now.
