Often times in the process of doing prestart checklists...the start of the risk assessment process prior to doing the JHA ...we become a bit casual in verifying our circumstances and equipment checks.A hands on and thorough verification of our safety equipment as well as environment is called for whereby it becomes more than a simple tick in the box on a sheet.Compliance on paper is fine but the purpose of actively checking must be seen for what it is.A process by which we can eliminate or minmise our exposure to hazards and place some basic controls in place to prevent and prepare for changing environmental circumstances.

When the process of checking becomes far too routine and is not cross checked by a fellow worker, supervisor and or safety rep.mistakes can happen.

Cross checking and inviting checking of our procedures helps everyone to keep a worksite safe.Things that one person doesn't pick up a second or third observer may.

In addition checking should be an active citing and challenging our controls process.
